MACHINE PITS

BRUNTON SHAW FACTORY

Waterproofing of three new heavy machine pits at Brunton Shaw’s cable winding factory. The location is challenging as the site is located adjacent to the canal.

The challenge

To provide a life-long waterproofing solution for three new cable winding machine pits. The challenging location has a natural water table and is adjacent to the canal.

Due to the heavy machinery and equipment contained on-site, access to the pits post-installation would not be possible. As a consequence, a robust, waterproofing solution was required, negating the requirement for remedial works once the site had been commissioned.

The Xypex solution

Over 450m3 of concrete within the machine pit bases and walls contained Xypex Admix to create a totally dry and watertight environment. This was achieved against a 2 metre hydrostatic head of pressure.

As a direct consequence of using Xypex, contractors were able to reduce the number of joints required. In addition, pour sizes weren’t restricted. This ensured continued momentum for the project, helping the schedule and budget to remain on track.

Xypex Admix C Series – Machine pit bases and walls

Xypex Concentrate – All joints, plus retrospective coating of a cable channel placed in plain concrete

Hydroswell Bentostrip – All joints

The results

The machine pits were signed off as completely watertight prior to the installation of the cable winding machines. Additional waterproofing of some cable channels previously placed in plain concrete was required. This was achieved by utilising Xypex Concentrate as a slurry coat. As a consequence, this element of the works could be included in the Xypex warranty.
